Family business stories are special, Hare & Forbes is another one
One of the great joys of researching and writing business histories is working on family businesses histories.
Over the years I've researched, written and/or published over 50 of them and they have all given me great joy.
There's something about being welcomed into a family business that's different from a corporate
entity, whether that be large or small.
I've recently had the privledge to research and write the story of Hare & Forbes/Machineryhouse, which is
actually the story of the Hare family.
Apart from the fact that I am a bit of a hardware/machine fanatic, it's been a wonderful jounrey
into the history of the second-hand machinery and auction industry in and around Sydney from
the 1920s onwards as well as the early history of Parramatta.
This is one of the many things I love about what I do, discovering history and stories I knew
nothing about, or may have some slight knowledge, but not much.
Hare & Forbes/Machineryhouse is another of the many untold stories of a committed,
hard-working, loyal and caring family that have built a successful business based on these values and
derives its strength, purpose and success from them.
