Building a business in the Middle East is easy
Many SMEs and larger companies don't know much about the Middle East: where it is, what it is, how it is. Even the term 'the Middle East' is, well, vague, certainly now.
So, I thought it would be useful to run a quick Q&A, Jaqui-style. Most of you know me so you know what to expect. Here we go.
1. What is the Middle East?
a) Somewhere between the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs? (Australians will get this probably no one else will).
b) Some part of our body below the waist line that you can't see after 40.
c) A English description for anywhere east of Palestine but not so far east that 'places' like India and anything further could be lumped in to something called the 'Far East'.
2. What are the nations that make up the GCC?
NO multiple choice on this one.
3. Can Arab women own, run and operate businesses in the Middle East?
a) Yes
b) No idea
c) I hope so
4. Can 'western women' conduct business in the Middle East?
(PS I am a blonde, single mum, and my son always traveled with me...the best idea ever.)
a) Yes
b) No idea
c) I hope so
5. Why would I look at 'the Middle East' rather than China?
a) No idea
b) The Middle East seems scary and China looks scary as well?
c) I don't know anyone who has done business in either place?
d) Are you really telling me that I could grow my business outside
Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/....everywhere in Australia?
6. What do I wear when I travel in the Middle East?
a) 'Normal' clothes
b) Clothes that cover every inch of my body, including my head
c) That black covering (called an abaya by the way).
7. Will I be safe?
a) You mean safer than downtown Sydney on a Friday night.
b) Safe from what?
c) Can you travel alone?
d) How will I be treated as a western female?
End of Q&A.
I've been asked these sorts of questions and many others and each time I answer them I hope that I dispel just some of the myths and fears that people have about conducting business in the Gulf countries of the Middle East.
It's a fabulous part of the world with a rich, diverse and fascinating history and culture.
